The New York Choreographic Institute was founded in the Spring of 2000 by Irene Diamond andPeter Martins. The Institute promotes the development of choreographers and dancers involved in classical choreography by providing opportunities to develop their talents.

During a two week residency with New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet, each choreographer is paired with a costume and lighting designer to develop a theoretical design for the piece they are choreographing.
